Individual therapy is just two people, yourself and your therapist having a conversation about whatever has brought you to therapy.
My style as a therapist is one that is collaborative and client centred. That means you and I will make choices together over what type of support I'll be providing you. That could be EMDR, or it could be CBT, depending on what's needed and what feels best for you.
Our therapy session will start with us getting to know each other - just like you have with anyone you've just met. We usually begin by talking about what has motivated you to reach out for therapy, and then we'll talk more broadly about your goals, and what kind of timeline you're hoping to stay in therapy for. These details help me to know what treatment approach will likely work best. We'll discuss the different types of support I can provide, and what sounds like the best approach for what you want to achieve.
One thing that I think is important for you to know is that I don't expect you to share anything more with me in that first session than what you're comfortable with. Therapy is a space where you are in control, and you are always allowed to set boundaries.
In a word: yes. As a therapist, it is part of my job to ensure that I protect your privacy and personal health information. There are limits with privacy, and I would have to disclose if there was a child in imminent danger, or if I was compelled due to a court order, but besides those extreme situations, what you say in therapy stays with me.

Group therapy is a gathering of individuals, typically ranging from 4 to 12 participants, coming together either virtually or in person. In our group therapy sessions, you'll be supported with care and compassion by myself and possibly another experienced therapist.
Depending on the group size, you may have the comforting presence of a single facilitator or the added support of two co-facilitators. I encourage each participant to openly share their thoughts, feelings, and experiences. This is a time where you will be heard, affirmed, and supported. Your journey towards healing and self-discovery begins here, with a community of like-minded people ready to walk this path together.
To ensure the best group dynamic, I conduct a pre-group intake call with each potential member. This personalized assessment allows you to openly discuss any concerns or reservations you may have with me.
Each group session is 90 minutes long.
During our first session, we'll begin with introductions, review our service agreement and the guidelines that create a safe and supportive atmosphere. You're encouraged to ask any questions you may have.
In the subsequent sessions (2-11), I will welcome you with a brief overview of the day's focus and then start with a check in with each participant. This is your time to share your thoughts, feelings, and insights, stemming from your experiences over the past week or from any recommended homework or tasks. Together, we'll explore these reflections, providing a space for your voices to be heard.
Some meetings will feature group exercises and activities, followed by open discussions where we'll explore the experiences of each group member during these exercises.
As we approach our final session, we'll come together for a discussion about the wisdom gained throughout our time together. You'll have the opportunity to reflect on key takeaways, ask any remaining questions, and receive recommendations to help set you up for success in the future.
Confidentiality is a major ground rule in group therapy, and is foundational for creating a safe space where group members can share and communicate openly. However, there is no guarantee of privacy in a group therapy setting, so use your own discretion when deciding what to share. Remember, you won’t be the only person sharing and group members get the most benefit when they can share openly, take risks, and explore spaces outside of their comfort zone.
During group sessions sharing and participation will be encouraged but never forced. Everyone’s comfort level is different and the goal is to create a space where each person feels safe, welcomed, and accepted. Even if you feel nervous or uncomfortable sharing in the beginning, you may find as time goes on you start to feel comfortable.
It is my job as the group facilitator to help the group communicate effectively, guide the conversation, and make sure sessions are running smoothly. I will always do what they can to create a safe, inclusive space for all group members. If you are ever having issues with trust or feeling safe in the group, reach out to me so I can talk with you privately about your concerns.
The cost for each group therapy session is $85, and you'll be participating in a series of 12 sessions. Rest assured, once you've enrolled, your seat is guaranteed and reserved for each session.
The groups at KB Counselling Therapy are closed, structured groups, so clients are asked to commit to the group from beginning to end. Groups my vary in length but will typically be anywhere from 8-12 weekly sessions.
You will go through all sessions with the same individuals and new members will not be able to join after registration is closed.
Some groups are held in an online virtual classroom. For those groups, you will get a link emailed to you the day of each session for you to join the virtual classroom at the session start time.
When a group is held in-person, members will be given the exact address and details of where to go, where to park, etc.
Life happens and sometimes cause delays, which is entirely understandable. If you are running late, please contact your group facilitator by email, text, or phone to let them know approximately how late you may be. If you are going to be more than 10 minutes late, you will be respectfully asked to miss that session so that the flow of session and sharing from other group members is not disrupted.
Out of respect for other group members, please try your best to show up on-time or a few minutes early. If someone is running late, the group will be notified that someone will be popping in a bit late, so that it is not a surprise interruption. Your reason for being late will never be shared with group. Please try to be quiet once you do join so whoever is talking at the time is not interrupted.
Once you register for group and make your first payment, you have committed to the full length of the group and there are no refunds. If there is an emergency, a medical reason, or some other personal crisis that stops you from completing the group sessions, you can reach out to your group facilitator directly to discuss the circumstances and see what options are available to you.
If a group session is cancelled by the facilitator due to weather, illness, or an emergency, there will be a session added at the end of the 12 sessions to make up that session.
